The Annotated Sherlock HolmesType of material: 2 volumes, Hardcover Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, edited by William S. Baring-Gould Publisher: Clarkson N. Potter, Inc Year: 1967 Pages: Price: Review: This is a marvelous work, one that should be in the collection of any fan of Sherlock Holmes. It contains the 56 short stories and 4 novels, in chronological order (according to Mr. Baring-Gould's excellent researches), with a wealth of notes, drawings, photographs and maps. The editor attempts to put facts to the fiction as it were: detailing dates of the adventures (using almanacs and weather reports to support or refute Dr. Watson's descriptions), describing in vivid detail Holmes' London, un-masking royalty, even researching Holmes' family tree! Several thoughtful essays accompany the Canon. They add depth and realism to the stories and characters, and provide a glimpse at why Sherlock Holmes continues to fascinate to this day. The copious notes to the Canon can be a distraction at first, but you will quickly be able to filter your reading and use them when you need. I think you will find The Annotated Sherlock Holmes a great addition to the collection of both novice and "expert" devotees. Reviewed by: Kevin C. Belton, October 2003
